Veritas Tools Canada #3

Rows of freshly baked plow planes ready for wrapping, boxing and shipping

A key part of my visit to Veritas is undeniably the final stage after manufacturing, which is the final assembly where the planes are meticulously assembled, lubricated so carefully and then checked over one last time before they leave.

It’s also the same place that the prestigious Veritas name and logo is engraved digitally into the back of the plane cutting irons.

Here in the final assembly room half a dozen people take care of all the final detail work. The fiddly components are fitted to the main bodies of the planes and checked in every way to make certain nothing flawed leaves the building, but this is not the first and only check. In fact, there are many checks along the way and every person at every stage is responsible for their stage. They care about what they make but also they care about the standards of the company. There’s a certain pride in the end result that they all share in.

In my next blog we’ll look at some of the production methods and the intolerance of tolerance. I expected high standards here, whether I expected such high self discipline and self critical critiquing I cannot say. I can only say how things seemed to me. The staff were all very knowledgeable and well versed in what their work.
