Old saw chocks post

Someone asked if I could repost sizes of a pair of saw chocks from some months back as they couldn’t find in in the archives so here it is.

Saw chock sizes

For those who sought the sizes for the saw chocks I posted of, here they are. Seems  straightforward to make, though the hardware is not standard. A bolt and wrench would work well as would a rod welded to the bolt. Anyway, you can see there are but two 5/16” M&T joints and a wooden hinge with a 3/16” steel rod passing through. Probably an afternoon’s work by hand, half or twice that by machine.

  1. The original post from June 9, 2012 is at:

The original post links to the same photos ( I think).

Question: Is leather (or perhaps a strip of rubber) a better ‘lining’ material for the jaws, or do you just use a 1/4″ strip of wood on each side as it appears in the drawing?

Should this be made of softwood for better vibration absorption?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

    1. I think the chocks might benefit from leather or rubber nut the ones I am using have no liner and work just fine. Hardwood or softer wood is fine too.The all metal versions have always been less pleasant because of the noise but wood has been perfect to my ears.
