Before the Workbench Drawer
For the under-bench stowage shelf I found things slipped off sideways or at the back from time to time. This is the first time I’ve added an upstand to prevent this from happening, though I have enclosed sides and back on many workbenches. I don’t want an enclosure this time. I may at some point want to pass long lengths under there for whatever reason so what I added can be folded in at each end just in case.
First I cut a 4 3/4″ (120mm) wide board between the back legs so that it was just a snug but not tight fit.
I cut two end pieces half an inch wider than the opening between the legs for each of the ends. These boards were also 4 3/4″ wide but tapered down to 2″ (50mm).
I used a 3″ butt hinge in the corner, fixing it first to the ends of the side pieces on the inside faces as shown and then, flushing the side piece with the end of the back board, fixing the hinged end pieces to the back board.
Sliding the upstand into place between the rear legs I screwed though the end pieces into the legs at the front with a single screw in each of the ends.
Now everything will be neatly contained and nothing will slide off again.

That work bench hinged back is really bad it doesn’t even line up at each side with anything at the front, terrible
Does that matter? It’s a workbench… Not sure why you felt the need to post this negativity.
It lines up perfectly, John, front, back and sides. You may not like the idea and I can of course accept that, but it is just your opinion and an opinion only has value if it is indeed based on reality. Here’s the quote: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.” They idea and functionality is still good. In fact, it’s really great! Perhaps you didn’t allow for the fact that the sides slop from 2” at the front to full width at the back?
The slope on the sides make it appear to not line up but of course, it does.
I like the idea of the part not only being removable but folding as it will save space when stored if not needed for a while and a large u-shaped piece is awkward to store.
I can’t imagine why it would need storing. I would just close in the wings and leave it at the back or even put it all the way underneath. I have no plans for not using it for its intended purpose but want the ability to remove it if I need to for some unforeseen reason. I wish John would have come back to explain his reasoning or acknowledge is misreading of the information as supplied because it does as I say line up perfectly on all fronts.
hi Paul, that looks like a 2” hinge if you have a 4” board. Is that correct?
No, My board is actually 4 3/4″. My mistake, and the hinge is 3″. I’m the source of misinformation!!!! Updated now.
