Ask Me Your Router Plane Questions

The Q&A’s on hand tools is popular and the video we did on sharpening the blades for router planes to keep it square and perfectly parallel to the sole and the surface of what you are routing is also proving popular. You can submit your questions for me to answer in a video at my bench if you’d like. That way everyone can learn at the same time.

  1. Paul,
I’d appreciate your knowledge in my project. I’m building a quarter-size rolltop desk using traditional tools. But I don’t know how to cut the groove for the tambour to ride in using hand planes. How would a curved groove be cut (since it’s a model the groove would only need to be 1/8″ deep)? Would I need to simply chisel the entire groove on both sides or is there a type of handplane (I own slot) I could use–maybe a router plane with a curved fence? Thank you and I’ve watch dozens and dozens of your videos and I so appreciate the knowledge you impart!

    1. A scratch stock is the key. Simply a piece of thin steel held between to pieces of wood with a notch thatallows the steel to scrape a recess.
