Fitting Foot Pulls

Noun or adjective, fitting works, and, well, no it’s not woodworking, but someone has to do it. Fit them I mean. I put one of these on the doors to create a hands-free door and found that they work so well I wanted them on all the doors. They do take a while to stop using your hands but with COVID_19 still prevalent these things kick start the habit of not contaminating surfaces. But it is much more benefit than that. Many times in a day I need to put something down to open the door with my hands and then pick it up again. These things totally eliminate that.

They are simple to fit and would have been simpler still had I not has stainless steel kick plates and electronic-release door stops in case of fire. A health and safety requirement by law on self-closing doors. Once you set the stop the door holds but if the alarm goes off the sound emitted triggers the release of the stop and the door closes. Dropping a plank or turning on a machine like my bandsaw does that too, unfortunately. But it’s a first-world problem. I simply reopen, hit the stop with my foot and it stays put again.

So now they are in place as we consider when different ones will take their desk up again here at the workshop studio and office. It will not be any time soon that everyone is in because we must completely restructure many areas. We actually isolated before it was a requirement and I have pretty much been on my own here for 9 weeks to date. I have taken the extra precautions for a variety of reasons not the least of which is my age, my diabetes, my asthma (very rare spasms nowadays), and such.

  1. Very clever bit of engineering, I can see them being adopted into a lot of work environments with the current pandemic. Thanks for sharing are they expensive I wonder ?

    1. They are. I think more because of the specialised application. Of course, we woodies would more likely make ones that simply have wood for the main body and then a metal grab part.

  2. Woodies !
When I was in high school we had metalworking and woodworking Classes , we would taunt each other with the woodies shouting rust, rust! While the metal workers would shout back termites!
    Stupid I know, kid stuff.
Funny because one of the metalworkers I knew created a business where he refinished wood floors…..
Myself a woodworker at heart, made his living working metal.
Anyhow I try and not touch doors in public places. Anything that will allow me not to touch door handles is a step forward. I don’t care how much it costs.
In time, when people understand the risk they will accept the increased cost.
Better than dying of some unknown disease.

  3. Man i wish restrooms had these. So many times you have to use a handle or two AFTER washing your hands. I try to use paper towels when possible but those new “environmentally friendly” blow driers in most restrooms now means no paper towels. Not even just for covid, just in general these would be nice.

    1. And they might not be so hygienic either. Dyson’s blade is definitely not something you want to slide your hands in and out of, that’s for sure.

      1. Very true. I read a research article how those dryers for the most part blew fecal particles across the room several feet, which then clung to walls and other surfaces. Plus they use electricity. Sometimes what seems to be the “green” soultion has to be weighed against the cons.

  4. I don’t expect to see these in the USA because I doubt they meet the requirements for ADA access (Americans with Disabilities Act). I’ve been using my shirttail if I can’t push the door open with my shoulder. It helps to wear Polo shirts with the tails not tucked in, so it’s easy to do.

  5. That is a good idea. Better than my idea of a door puller.

I was going to make one, like a batton with a hook. I thought of it when i had to pull a door at a garage after paying for petrol. Just like everyone else who left that building also had to do the same. I Thought it would be a useful item to keep in the car. I had visions of everyone using them.

But then I saw people with disposable gloves….
