Hissy Snake Project

If you are interested in making a new toy for and with your children this one will be for you. I loved making this and suspect it may well be the first one that’s been made by hand tool methods in decades if not ever. You need very few tools to do it and it can be made from scraps of wood too. I have seen them around for perhaps three decades and thought about making one but then I decided this was the time as I have an 18-month-old granddaughter who might enjoy one. Also, of course, it is one of my ten projects to relieve the pressures from COVID-19 isolation and lockdown.

There is quite a bit to learn from this and of course shaping is yet another key skill every woodworker should have. Add in the skills of spokeshaving and using a rasp, planing, and sawing and you are developing even more pivotal skills so I do hope that you enjoy joining in the fun!

  3. Paul thanks for the video. How long did you make your Hissy Snake ?
    I guess it’s about 18 inches. There might be a specific length to get the
    correct wiggle ?
