  20. Happy birthday, mr. Sellers.

Another year older, another year wiser.

I celebrated in my own way, removing the teeth from an old, terribly butchered-up saw, one that’s definitely older than 71 years. Someone in its long history attempted to sharpen it. The result was a nightmare. Who knows how long it has been sitting in that condition, useless.

Today I removed the rust and filed off the old teeth, made new nicks with a modified hacksaw following your procedure and filed new teeth. Only thing remaining is to give it its final sharpening tomorrow and a bit of linseed oil for the handle. It was getting too cold in the shed, my fingers were beginning to turn blue, so time to get back in the house to warm up a bit.

Thanks to you this little pistol-gripped 12″ saw today got a new lease on life. This saw shares its new birthday with the craftsman who showed this bumbling apprentice how to go about the task.

  21. Happy Birthday, Paul! All the best!
Thank you for being there for us, your

  45. A very Happy Birthday Paul. You have become a constant source of encouragement to me and especially since this pandemic has left a lot of us home bound. To be honest I have turned to your blog, Facebook page and of course the masterclass daily and sometimes several times during the day. I suffer from Anxiety, Depression and more recently arthritis, so the woodworking has helped all three of these. You have a way of teaching that not many have. I truly do appreciate what you do. What you offer is much more then a woodworking class, Its also a place of calm and relaxing therapy delivered by just doing what you are so good and and obviously enjoy.

    Thanks again Paul

I have learned so much from you.

  126. Happy Birthday Paul!

Thank you for teaching us woodworking with hand tools!
Over fifteen years ago I stopped trying to learn woodworking because the magazines I was reading had me believe I needed a bunch of machinery I couldn’t afford.
You’ve shown me that’s not true.

    Thank you!

  127. Happy birthday mentor Paul.
I love to watch your work and the skills you have in your hands, You only have about 6 months to catch up to me since I also turned 71 back in June. God Bless you and grant you many more years of helping teach the hand tool woodworking trade.

  128. Happy birthday Paul!
You are an inspiration to us all. As I have recently retired from 45 years in restaurant kitchens I was looking for a number of things to keep me moving forward on my journey. Photography and playing my guitars and woodworking projects when I stumbled on your video on chisel sharpening, I since have devoured all your videos several times. At the onset I was put off by the expense of power tools and the room to house them all, however after viewing your videos and purchasing elderly planes ( Stanley 4,5,&6 on eBay) for the price of one new plane, a whole new world has opened up to me.
    Thank you and be well
    Rob Sacco

  129. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday, Many Happy Returns,
I have always liked the thought that black cats may be lucky, and although not superstitious, like one about our cottage !
It would be nice to imagine that the coming year will only get better when you have three in the garden for company when digging, planting and constructing.

  130. Happy Birthday Paul! I can’t think of a single person who has so inspired hundreds of thousands of new and existing woodworkers to improve their woodworking skills, especially with the use of hand tools. Your vast knowledge and willingness to share it speaks volumes about your love for the profession. From sharing your life with us all on your posts it is obvious that yours has been a life well-lived. I wish you many more joyous and healthy birthdays in the future. Thank you for all that you do.

  131. Happy Birthday Paul,
you deserve a gong for all your efforts there are so many positives that come from the classes you provide in hand tool work.

  132. Happy Birthday Paul. I would bet that it is the best cut cake possible with all slices being even and square and measured to perfection 😀

  133. God bless and my sincere appreciation for your teaching. I have been an amateur woodworker for 30 years with only a modicum of improvement over most of that time. Paul, you have such a clarity when teaching that I immediately grasp, and I am leaps and bounds more capable today than when I discovered your teaching a few years ago. Happy Birthday, and New Year!

  147. Mr. Sellers,
You have been a great inspiration to me during this pandemic. Listening to you patiently describe the process of the work you do and the thoughts and sensory experiences that you have while doing it made me feel like I had someone teaching just me. Listening to your voice and the words you say has been a great comfort also. I wish you the happiest of birthdays sir. I hope I continue to have the fortunate blessing of hearing your voice inspire and teach for many more decades.

  148. Paul you have been a real inspiration to me for many years now. I first discovered you when I found that my Morrison’s machine wouldn’t work and I was “forced” to cut mortises by hand. I found one of your videos online, learned the skill under your tutelage and haven’t cut a mortise with a machine since! Your passion and generosity for sharing your hard earned skills are a real inspiration. Thank you for everything and a very Happy Birthday!🎉

  149. Happy birthday Paul. Not just a lover of woodworking, but of people, the countryside and philosophy too.

  150. Happy Birthday Paul. We are the same age. I met you online and watched your youtube videos to relax before sleeping. Then I got hooked! I am having a bit of trouble learning to sharpen my old saws, but I am eager to get past this in the future. Thank you for your calm and dedication to teaching!

Praying for your health help and happiness in this next “run around the sun”

  161. Happy Birthday,Paul. I wish you had been around in 1973 when I started to do woodworking in NYC. My information came from English woodworking books and where does one find “deal” in NY ? After embracing machinery for decades I now live in the country and with your help and enthusiasm am working more and more with hand tools. Better on the ears. Thanks

  162. Happy Birthday Paul and very best wishes to you, your family and your team. You do inspiring work and I’ve learned a lot of useful things from your blog, youtube etc . I’m particularly glad that you maintain the hand-tool skills and craftsmanship that has been lost in so many places under the pressure to get rapid results regardless of quality and durability. Wishing you health, happiness and enduring, durable, wealth.

Just like many here you have been a great source of woodworking knowledge for me, and there are no words that can express the debt of gratitude that I and others owe you for the wealth of knowledge and skill that you have passed on to us.

Hand tool woodworking has been a big part of my life since the start of lockdown here in Sydney Australia last March 2020. Before then I couldn’t even cut wood with any saw. Now I’ve made a few of your dovetail boxes, a couple of wooden mallets, your tool drawer organiser and even my very own workbench based on your videos.

    Thank you.
    Paolo

  178. Happy Birthday, Paul.

Since starting to watch your videos, I’ve made, and then given to our local Visiting Nurses Thrift Shop, about 75 dovetail boxes based on the ones you make. They sell quickly and help support their worthy organization.

    Thank you,
    Harold

  199. Sir Paul ; Mine was the 16th. I’m now 74. My Dad learned the trade back in the 1920’s when he arrived from Norway at the ripe old ae of 16 ! He learned from Norwegian and German cabinetmakers in Brooklyn n y . I learned from him what I have been watching you also do. Variations of course.
One thing bothers me immensely about your placement of your planes face/blade down. Dad would have, SHOT, me if I hade done that. I Always set the plane down on its, SIDE, so the blade would not be damaged on the workbench. I have most of Dads tools including even a 24″ Stanley Joiner plane. Oh, the stories ! That is my 2 cents. Otherwise, YOU, know your business ! Thank YOU , Leonard J. Muller 40 Russell Road, Greenfield Center n y 12833
