John’s lovely tool box
I designed this tool box as an apprentice project for training them in door making , box making construction, drawer making, raised panel construction. From fitting recessed hinges to lock fitting, this tool box has it all.
Remember last week’s blog when John Winter, my friend and apprentice, started his tool box. He’s really progressing well and here it is with the hinged fall-front door in place. It’s almost identical to mine which holds my critical tools such as a full set of chisels,, square, 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 bench planes, tenon saw, dovetail saw, coping saw, mallet, layout knife and more.
He’s chuffed with his efforts and I am proud of the tightness of his dovetails and mortise and tenon joints and these are his first raised panel, which he raised with a 4 1/2 smoothing plane. The grooves he ran with the Veritas plow (plough UK) plane. No machines on this at all.
Tomorrow he will start the tool tills and then he will fit the lock. In this project John has learned many dimensions in woodworking.
See “Why we work with hand tools” below to see one made from mahogany.
Can we get more info on these boxes short of taking the classes with you? It looks like a nice traveling chest.
