Workshop family revival – Let’s do it

I have always had my family in the workshop working alongside me. That’s the most fun of all and something we as a family have always had as part of our life. This afternoon was fun and very relaxing in the Castle workshop. My son Joseph and his wife Kat were there whittling away on wood and so too Kat’s dad Terry. John bought a very nice Record #4 with all brass parts and wooden knob and tote and was fixing that up. It was a bargain at £4 ($6 US). Joseph was testing out the new Veritas Gentleman’s saws for me and we will post findings soon.

My two eBay planes arrived but one arrived with a bad crack at the mouth as shown. It’s another Woden #4 ½ so it’s worth brazing and that’s what I’ll do. I really love these planes. I have brazed them before with great success. I once dropped a Stanley #90 bullnose and cracked a chunk off. I still have it with it’s brazed but working just fine.

Before I went to the US I found a Woden #4 on eBay with a buy it now price of $19, but shipping made it prohibitive at $66. I went to the location and saw that it was in New York state so I emailed my friend Tom and he bought it as he too lives there. It turned out that it was minimally used. I sharpened it and demonstrated with it when I was in Canada and the USA. Very happy with it.

There are not too many Woden planes offered on eBay or anywhere else, but they are very fine planes that follow the Bailey frog pattern I really like.
